Core Android Developer (For independent contractors)

As the Core Android Developer in the Car Hire Insurance & Flexibility Team located in Amsterdam, you will expand the reach and impact of two mobile experiences in Booking.com’s Android app: Car Hire Insurance, protecting customers when they rent a car, and Flexibility products for Accommodation, giving guests the freedom to change their plans. You will be working closely with native mobile teams within Booking’s app frameworks to make it easier for the 8.5M people who open our apps everyday to protect their car rentals and add flexibility to their stays.

With a talented team of UX designers, app developers, and data analysts, you will create a seamless mobile app customer experience to increase engagement and bookings.

Responsibilities include: involvement in the development of new features, collaborating with other native Android developers; collaborating with the rest of the Insurance Mobile Apps team to create a seamless experience across mobile platforms; ensuring the utmost high quality of the Booking.com app in production by monitoring crashes, firefighting incidents, solving complex bugs, etc., and leading incident investigation if necessary; identifying, fostering, and proactively helping colleagues grow professionally, taking a significant role in on-boarding new team members; continuously improving services you own making them more performant and utilising resources in the most optimised way; ensuring that the Insurance product and new features are always kept up-to-date with the latest technology standards and department guidelines; ensuring that service-level-agreements for test coverage and quality are met by implementing tests and processes; performing profiling to find bottlenecks and optimize performance, and ensuring that performance metrics are set up and monitored for app health; being able to connect business and product goals to complex technical tasks; solving issues prioritizing based on customer impact; and collaborating with app developers, backend developers, product owners, and quality specialists to constantly improve customer experience within the app platform.

Required skills: we expect our developers to know the ins and outs of the Android framework and to deliver polished products that customers want to use. We need self-starters who are great at solving problems, initiate solutions and discussions and are not afraid of solving challenges due to our large scale.

Must have: 3+ years of experience as an Android Developer, with Kotlin as your primary language; strong, hands-on experience building production UI with Jetpack Compose; solid understanding of Kotlin Coroutines and Flow for async and reactive programming; experience with modern Android architecture (MVVM/MVI, Jetpack ViewModel, Navigation) and dependency injection (Hilt/Dagger); solid experience writing tests: unit, UI (Compose / Espresso) and screenshot tests; experience with multi-module Gradle projects; strong degree of communication skills - being able to effectively communicate to both technical and non-technical stakeholders; fully comfortable working in English, both in writing and spoken.

Nice to have: knowledge of full stack engineering and backend software concepts; experience with A/B testing and release planning; experience with GraphQL (schema design, queries, mutations, fragments), ideally in a federated setup; experience profiling Android apps (Android Studio Profiler, Baseline Profiles, Macrobenchmark); having shipped an app to the Google Play Store; self-motivated to explore new technologies, applications and environments.
