Interim Senior EHS Engineer

For an international organization within the pharmaceutical industry in the Leiden area, we are looking for an experienced Interim Senior EHS Engineer. This is a senior and hands-on EHS position within a complex operational environment. The organization is looking for someone who can work independently, quickly understand what is happening on site and identify where improvements are required. The role requires more than developing EHS policies and procedures.

A key part of the assignment is translating EHS requirements into solutions that actually work in practice. You will work closely with different departments and stakeholders and ensure that safety requirements are understood, supported and implemented on the shop floor. You will become part of an existing EHS team and will have significant responsibility for independently driving EHS topics forward.

Responsibilities: Identifying, evaluating and addressing EHS and safety risks across the site; Independently identifying areas where EHS improvements are required and translating these into concrete actions; Supporting and further improving contractor management and contractor safety; Reviewing existing EHS processes and identifying opportunities for improvement; Developing and improving EHS procedures and ensuring their practical implementation; Translating EHS requirements into clear and workable processes for employees and contractors; Working closely with Operations, Engineering and other relevant departments; Advising internal stakeholders on EHS and general safety topics; Creating awareness and engagement around safety across different levels of the organization; Driving EHS improvements from identification through to implementation; Ensuring that procedures are not only compliant on paper, but also effective and workable in day-to-day operations; Acting as a senior EHS sparring partner for internal stakeholders.

What are we looking for? For this assignment, we are looking for an experienced EHS professional who is comfortable taking ownership and operating independently.

You have: Several years of relevant experience within EHS, HSE or Safety Engineering; Experience working within a pharmaceutical environment; Experience with contractor safety and/or contractor management is strongly preferred; Experience translating EHS policies and procedures into practical implementation; The ability to communicate effectively with both management and employees on the shop floor; A pragmatic and solution-oriented approach; The ability to create support for safety improvements rather than relying solely on procedures and enforcement; Experience within engineering, technical or construction-related environments is considered an advantage.

You are able to assess a situation, identify the underlying problem and take ownership of moving the solution forward. At the same time, you understand that successful EHS management requires collaboration. You know how to engage different stakeholders, explain the reasoning behind safety requirements and create practical solutions that people can actually work with.

The assignment: The expected duration is approximately 12 months. You will join an established team but will have significant independence within your own responsibilities. The assignment therefore suits an experienced EHS professional who enjoys combining technical EHS expertise with stakeholder management and practical implementation. Interested?
